Thanksgiving Week Activities: 2020 Virtual Turkey Trot 5K & 1K Kiddie Trot

The Thanksgiving holiday may be the same every year, but what is truly special about the holiday is what you make of it. For those of you who feel like there aren't enough activities to do during Thanksgiving week, follow us for some new ideas!

Idea #1: Participate in the City of Upland's 13th Annual Turkey Trot 5K! We've gone virtual this year! For additional information and/or to register, please visit 2020 Virtual Turkey Trot.

Snuggle Up!

Idea #2: Snuggle up on the couch or spread some blankets and pillows on the floor to watch your favorite movies and episodes of your favorite shows. Add new movies and episodes each year, creating a new family tradition.

Host A Pie Swap

Idea #3: A Pie Swap gives you the opportunity to share your favorite pies with friends and family and get some new ones in return to try out for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Perhaps try a new recipe from the Festive Pie Recipes series!

Watch The Macy's Day Parade

Idea #3.5:  Watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Start your day tomorrow by tuning into the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Although some things may be different this year, you can still rely on this tradition of watching the parade on Thanksgiving Day. Tune in by clicking
The Parade will be available from 9:00 a.m. to noon in any time zone.

Create A Thanksgiving Tree

Idea #4: Create A Thanksgiving Tree. Place long branches into a pretty glass vase or candle holder and tie with a fall-themed ribbon. Next to the tree, place leaf cut-outs made of pretty fall colored construction paper. Each leaf must have a piece of yarn, twine, or ribbon tied through it, so it may hang on the tree. Add some pens or pencils next to the tree.

Throughout the day, family members and friends will write things they are grateful for on the front of the colored leaves. After the Thanksgiving meal, adults and children can take turns picking a leaf from the tree, reading and guessing who wrote on each leaf. Whoever guesses correctly gets to pick the next leaf.

Family Storytelling

Idea #5: Take turns telling stories. Whether in person, over the phone, or via Zoom, family members can share stories from their own lives. This is a great idea to use as a chance for the adults to pass down stories from the family or to re-tell funny stories that get told and retold each year.

Enjoy An Outdoor Family Activity

Idea #6: The weather is definitely cooler, but there are still many beautiful, sun-shiney days to get outdoors and enjoy a family activity. Go for a hike, hop on a bike, or even just go for a walk. Enjoy the outdoors with one another.

Either with friends of family, games are always a great time! This week, we'll add a twist to some classics with our week-long series of Family Thanksgiving Games. Enjoy!

Let's put a spin on the classic game of Tic-Tac-Toe.  You'll need tape, a non-stick table, and mini pumpkins in two different colors. With the tape, create nine even spaced squares. Each player will receive mini pumpkins in the same color.  Let the Thanksgiving games begin!

Turkey Tag

After a good meal, why not participate in a game to help burn off some calories and create some family, outdoor interaction?

To start, each person will stick their three clothespins anywhere on their clothing. Once everyone is ready, have them spread out and pick the beginning positions for the tag game that is about to begin.  Each player tries to remove the other players turkey pins without losing their own in the process. Once a player has grabbed a turkey clothespin off of someone else, they can place in in their pocket or drop it on the ground. If the last turkey clothespin has been pulled from a player, they are out of the game.

The object of the games is to be the last person standing with at least one turkey clothespin still on.

Candy Corn Relay Race

Children are always full of energy. How about an activity that helps them burn some of the energy?

Divide family members into teams of two. Place a jar of candy corn at one side of the lawn or living room and a small bowl for each team. Have each team take turns racing through an obstacle course holding a spoon (any size) of candy corn.

The team that gets more candy corn in their bowl at the end of a specified amount of time wins a prize or trophy!  Perhaps introduce this as a family tradition. Then, each year, the winning team would receive the trophy, adding for a bit of competition each year!
